WATER COLOURS - SERIES SYNOPSIS

Provocative and stimulating, ‘Water Colours’ provides a pioneering breakthrough in underwater communication and a landmark step towards improving our understanding in this field. Capturing images entirely new to science, the series was filmed in the colourful paradise of the remote South Pacific islands and features compelling testimony from leading scientists, uncovering the truth about exactly how fish see colours - and each other - in their world.

Throughout the series, we encounter enigmatic creatures with vision beyond anything we can perceive, including secret wavelengths, eye metamorphosis, polarization and UV. How fish see and what they see brings the overwhelming revelation that in their world, human beings are virtually ‘blind’.

Colourful patterns are analyzed, vivid displays deciphered and complex behaviours understood. For the first time on film, we also discover how fluorescence plays a key role in the lives of many species of fish.

The series conclusively proves that marine animals manipulate colours to transform the way they look, switching colours and patterns to express emotion and mood and altering position and behaviour, depending on what they want to say. The overwhelming conclusion is that colour is the prime cryptic language of the fish, used for attracting mates, avoiding predation and fooling potential prey.

From the producers of the multi award-winning series ‘The Reef’, ‘Water Colours’ is a timely and unique portrayal of the fascinating and virtually unknown world of underwater colour communication.

"Opening sleepy eyes" and helping also scientists and researchers to unfold marine life's secrets. "Water Colors" really opened new horizons for science as well as underwater film making in order to study and understand underwater communication and marine life style! It's a very fascinating new chapter of science that will enrich peoples perception of life and color in general...

"Really superb films with strong scientific underpinnings, beautiful music, and a compelling narration - How brilliant I found them to be. Not only was the photography striking but the concepts are revolutionary..." - (Mark Madison, Ph.D., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; American Conservation Film Festival_

"Uniquely lovely footage - you clearly have huge experience of the environment and animals..." - (Doug Allen, BBC/Blue Planet
